Our days are full of empowered stories. Whether it’s catching up on the events of the day with our spouse, listening to podcasts or the news or the day, or listening to the hyped up, sometimes exaggerated adventures of our kids, stories surround us practically every minute of the day. We even dream stories.
Stories are a powerful vehicle of learning.
Stories are more than just words on a page. Learning from stories is a deeply ingrained and effective aspect of the human experience. And Empowered Storytelling is… proactive, dynamic, and adaptable.
Why does telling a better story matter?
- Enhanced Engagement and Retention. Stories often evoke emotions, making them more memorable. Emotional engagement helps in the retention of information. Accordingly, we are more likely to remember the message or lesson when we care about the characters or the narrative. We also retain more information when we listen to a story in audio. As can be seen by research Forbes conducted which showed that we retain up to 81% of what we hear. What business wouldn’t want that type of ROI!
- Improved Relatability and Empathy. Stories allow us to see the world from different perspectives. By following characters through their journeys, we develop empathy and understanding for experiences that may be different from our own. This can broaden our worldview and enhance our social and emotional skills.
- Imagination and Creativity. Stories stimulate the imagination, encouraging us to think beyond our immediate circumstances and experiences and consider what might be possible. This fosters creativity and innovative thinking.
- Reflection and Self-Discovery. Stories often prompt personal reflection. By identifying with characters or situations, individuals can gain insights into their own lives, which can be a powerful tool for personal growth and self-awareness.
Although the story may be ours, we can still tell empowered stories for the benefit of the listener. That’s not to say that our story changes based on who is listening. We should tell stories in a way that connects emotionally with the listener. The emotional empowerment of story can be humorous… witty… infuriating… and even inspiring.
Empowered storytelling can give you courage. Courage to try something new. Courage to fail. And courage to stand up and try again.
